Max Sayers

August 30, 1935 ~ April 5, 2017 (age 81) 81 Years Old


     Max Sayers, age 81, of Shippenville, died Wednesday afternoon, April 5, 2017 at his home following a long battle with Kidney Disease.

     Born August 30, 1935 in Curllsville, he was a son of the late Earl and Blodwen Woods Sayers and was a 1953 graduate of the Sligo High School.

     He was an avid outdoorsman and loved traveling, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.  He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, American Legion Post #66 and Antler Club of Lucinda.

     Max worked as an equipment operator for C&K Coal for 26 years, retiring in 1996. Prior to working for C&K he held various positions for SORCE Resources.  After retirement Max worked at Knox Auto delivering parts, a job he truly loved, allowing him to travel the back roads of Pennsylvania and visit with all the people he encountered.

     On August 1, 1958, in the Curllsville United Church of Christ, he married the former Joyce Barlett.

     Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joyce Sayers; one son, Mark Sayers and his wife, Melinda, of Shorewood, IL: one daughter, Barbara Bensink of Rochester, NY and a grandson, Kyle Bensink, also of Rochester, NY.

     Also surviving is his mother-in-law, Mary Barlett of Shippenville; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Evie and Joe Gourley of Sligo; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Sayers and Shirley Sayers and numerous nieces and nephews.

     In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by five siblings:  George, Ralph, Briton, Earl and Mary (Craig) and a son-in-law, Bruce Bensink.

    Family and friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2017 and 10-11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the William N. Rupert Mortuary, Inc., 430 Mendenhall Avenue, Knox.

     Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, in the funeral home with the Reverend Randy Evans, Clarion/Forest VNA Hospice Chaplain, officiating.

   A private interment will follow in the Churchville Cemetery, Sligo.
