Shirley Monrean Obituary

 

     Shirley Wetzel Monrean, age 82, of Knox, passed away Thursday evening, May 24, 2018 at UPMC Hamot in Erie.

      Born January 28, 1936 in Knox, she was a daughter of the late William S. and Lula L. Bashline Wetzel. She graduated from the White Memorial School in Knox with the class of 1953.

     Shirley worked as a secretary in the billing department of Knox Glass Containers from 1953 to 1963; was the auditor for Beaver Township, Clarion County for several years and prepared individuals’ income tax returns for 40 years.

     She married Melvin Junior Monrean on May 9, 1959 in the St. Paul’s Reformed Church.  He preceded her in death on November 3, 1998.

     Shirley was a member of the Girl Scouts, serving in many various positions and receiving the “Thanks” badge in 1992.  She was also a member of the Knox Civic Club, where she served in several posts; the American Legion Auxiliary #997 of Lamartine and the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, serving on numerous committees.

     She was the secretary/treasurer of the St. Paul’s Union Cemetery Association for over 35 years and was a board member of the Alliance for Wetlands and Wildlife.

     Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family and sewing, tole painting, traveling and baking with her granddaughter.

     Survivors include three daughters:  Karla Coleman and her husband, James, of Bonita Springs, Florida; Kimberly French and her husband, David, of Meadville and Regina Taylor and her husband, Tim, of Tionesta; one granddaughter, Kristina Taylor; two brothers:  Carl Wetzel and his wife, Cathy, of Butler and Daryl Wetzel and his wife, Helen, of Knox and two sisters:  Pauline Wolfgang of German Town, Maryland and Beverly Knight and her husband, Dan, of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

    Shirley is also survived by her in-laws: Pauline Stover and husband, Cornelius; Lois Ashbaugh and husband, Cecil; Ruby Mays and Florence Thomspon.

     In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her step mother, Betty Wetzel; sister-in-law, Kay O’Neil; brothers-in-law: Fred Mays, Miles Wolfgang and Budd Thompson, as well as Shirley’s companion, Walter Fye.

     Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday May 28, 2018 at the William N. Rupert Mortuary, Inc., 430 Mendenhall Avenue, Knox and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2018  in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1051 Twin Church Road, Knox.

     Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church with Reverend Karen Parsh, church pastor, officiating.

      Interment will follow in the St. Paul’s Union Cemetery.
