John Hynes Obituary

     John Robert “Bob” Hynes, age 93, of Manhattan Beach, California and formerly of Bloomfield Hills and Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, passed away Friday October 17, 2025 at the Tibor Rubin VA Hospital in Long Beach, California.

     Born July 11, 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late John Leo Hynes and Sarah Theresa Devereaux Hynes.

    While a member of the United States Air Force, he met and married the former Jean E. Williams of New Bethlehem, daughter of the late Col. Donald S. and Viola M. Williams. After 48 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on May 21, 2003. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 18 years, Mary Brieden on September 25, 2023.

    Bob was a veteran Detroit radio and television personality moving to the Detroit area in 1966 to host the “Bob Hynes Morning Show” on ABC 7. While hosting the morning show he interviewed many celebrities of the late 60’s, including Gordy Howe, Robert Goulet, Florence Henderson, Lucille Ball, Adam West, Cybill Shephard, Bob Newhart and others.

   In the 1970’s and 1980’s Bob hosted an afternoon radio talk show, and filled in on other radio and TV productions.  In 1972 he teamed up with producer Dan Kibee and actor Dom DeLuise to film the television show “Road Company” The pilot episode featured the city of Houston and included musical guests Kenny Rogers and Sheila MacRae as well as Apollo 12 astronaut Rick Gordon.

     After a stint as a TV weatherman and radio show host, he fulfilled his lifelong dream by co-founding WYUR radio.

     After retirement, Bob served on the board of the Yankee Air Museum (Michigan Flight Museum) and was active in the Grosse Pointe Men’s Club.

     Survivors include his sons: Michael (Rosalind) Hynes of Asheville, North Carolina and Patrick (Andrea) Hynes of Manhattan Beach, California, and four grandchildren as well as the 7 children, 19 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren of Mary Brieden.

    Bob is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law, Judy Williams of New Bethlehem and Patricia Williams Frost of San Diego, California

     In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by his daughter Elizabeth Ann Hynes; sisters: Phyllis Mauger, Joan Coveney, Conni Schultz and brother,  Ed Hynes; brother-in-law, Donald S. Williams, Jr. and sister-in-law, Catherine Williams Curti and her husband, Ciro.

     Family and friends will be received from 5 - 6 p.m., Thursday, October 23, 2025 at the Rupert Funeral Home and Cremation Service chapel, 233 Penn Street, New Bethlehem.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, October 24, 2025 at the St. Charles Catholic Church, 201 Washington Street, New Bethlehem.  Father Samuel Bungo, parish priest, will serve as celebrant.

     Interment will follow in the St. Charles Catholic Cemetery with military honors, accorded by the Walter W. Craig American Legion Post #354 of New Bethlehem.
