Steve was an incredibly loving husband to Elizabeth “Libby”, an excellent father to Bruce (Billie), the world’s best grandpa to Denver Von and Bennett Joseph, brother, and friend. Born to Barbara Jodon and Howard LeRoy Daugherty on October 12, 1957, Steve dedicated his life to his family and was a man many aspire to be.
He always seemed to be right where he was supposed to be. Whether lending a helping hand to a friend or supporting his family, he always found a way to share his selfless, humble, genuine, and faithful heart with those around him. His laugh was contagious, and his personality lit up the room. Steve had a way of putting a smile on anyone's face by telling a great story or simply by being himself.
On September 15, 1978, Steve and Libby hit the road and ran away from home. They got to the interstate and Steve asked Libby if she wanted to go east or west, and Libby said, “I’ve never been west. Let’s go west.” They drove for 1,500 miles and landed in Laramie, Wyoming where they lived until 1983. Steve married Libby on December 26, 1986 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Shippenville. Their love story is over 50 years long and they most recently celebrated 37 years of beautiful and faithful marriage.
A butcher by trade, Steve was trained at the National School of Meat Cutting in Toledo. He was also an avid upland bird, turkey, and waterfowl hunter and horse racing enthusiast. You could always find him surrounded by friends and family in his free time at Gruber Farms, O’Neil’s Quality Foods, Presque Isle Downs, or a Rankin auction.
All truly loved Steve and although he will be missed by many, he will never be forgotten. The positive impact Steve has made on those around him is undeniably unique to this world and something no other person could replicate. Steve passed away peacefully holding the hands of his wife and son on May 7, 2024.
In addition to Libby, Bruce, Billie Rae, DD, and Bubba, Steve is survived by his brother, Shawn (Belinda) Daugherty of Virginia and their children, Amanda (Brian) Blair, Alissa (Nate) Braun, and Jaylen Daugherty, and his sister, Sheila (Bruce) Knight of New York and their daughter, Tesha Daugherty. Steve is also survived by many brother and sister in-laws: John (Deb) Gruber and their children, JP (Bridget) Gruber and Jesse (Jamie) Hughes, Becky (Pete) Bowser and their children, Sarah and Brian Bowser, Gretchen (Ed) Frye and her children, Julia, Jacob, and Jaclyn Frye, and Kate (Craig) Schoeppner and their children, Broc and Carla Schoeppner. Steve is also incredibly loved and missed by numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, and his dog and best buddy, Max. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Barb Daugherty, and his in-laws, Jiggs and Lois Gruber.
