Thomas Orry Shattenberg, age 83 of Shippenville, went to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family on Thursday afternoon, April 10, 2025 after experiencing heart failure at the Clarion Hospital.
Born December 3, 1941 on the family farm in Shippenville, he was a son of the late Orry Hays Shattenberg and Dorothy Thomas Shattenberg.
Following high school graduation, he entered the United States Navy. He served in the Bay of Pigs Invasion and was honorably discharged in 1963.
Thomas married the former Kathleen M. Gesin on September 22, 1965. The couple recently celebrated 59 years of marriage.
He spent the bulk of his career in trucking, driving and dispatching. And, enjoyed his time with the PA Bureau of Forestry as a Fire Warden and heavy equipment operator.
Thomas belonged to the Shippenville-Elk Volunteer Fire Department for 63 years as a life member and served as a lieutenant in the fire police for many years. He was also a member of the Fryburg Sportsman’s Club, Clarion American Legion Post #066 and the Antler Club in Lucinda. He was a former member, while he owned a Harley, of Clarion County ABATE.
He enjoyed shooting pistol competitively and reloading, was an avid hunter and a shooting enthusiast, as well as a collector of guns. Thomas also enjoyed tractor rides and shows with his brothers and neighbors, and the companionship and time spent at Camp “McGee”.
Anyone that knew Thomas will truly miss his stories of the many hunting and fishing adventures.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; four children: Janet (Vaughn) Stewart of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Kirk (Sharon) Shattenberg of Brookville; Pamala (Tim) Rapp of Clarion and Lori (Barry) Ida of Apollo, and four grandchildren: Derek Shattenberg, Brooke Shattenberg, Nicholas Beightel and Courtney Stewart.
Thomas is also survived by two brothers: Walter C. Shattenberg of Shippenville and Robert (Christine) Shattenberg of Oil City; numerous nieces and nephews, and close friends, who he considered family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Helen M. Shattenberg.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Clarion American Legion Post #066 at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2025 at the William N. Rupert Mortuary, Inc., 430 Mendenhall Avenue, Knox.
Family and friends will be received from 2-6 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with a Memorial Service at 6 p.m. Reverend Mark Micklos will officiate.
“Last Call” from Shippenville-Elk Volunteer Fire Department will immediately follow.
Interment will take place in the Shippenville Emanuel Cemetery.
