What a very special lady who was completely sold out to her Lord. I was a student at West Forest who walked over to her house and took piano lessons from her for four years in the late 1960's. I remember her asking, "Jean, have you been playing hymns again instead of practicing your exercises and scales?" Of course the answer was yes and she would scold me. I have been the pianist and involved in special music my entire life at every church I have ever attended. Humbly I have to wonder how many people have been blest through her students because of her influential role. She probably knows that number now, right after she would have heard, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of the Lord." She has been one of the most influential people in my life. I am so thankful I had the privilege of sitting under her teaching.
Oh, and one more thing. I always struggled with memorizing music. She would try and try. She would say, "You memorize scripture, don't you? It's the same thing." Unfortunately, my mind would just go blank in the middle of a piece of music. She told me I had a mental block with music memorization. So I was usually the only student at recital that was using music. By the way, nothing has changed in that regard. If you take my music away, my fingers stop. Funny! Some people find freedom without the music. I find freedom within the music. She is finally home.
